A Letter to Draco Malfoy

by Mahi Singh Rajput

Dear Draco,

I was stunned when I first heard a voice saying, “It’s true, then, what they’re saying on the train. Harry Potter has come to Hogwarts”. That blonde, pale-faced boy had pride on his face, a shine that could be seen even in the darkest times. You stood out when you made a gesture towards Harry to be his friend, but, to be honest, your way was egoistic. Friendship is not about ego. It’s about love, which is buried deep inside of you. My excitement withered away in a moment when you bullied Ron. Honestly, I was devastated that the person I adored was so rude. Furthermore, you were sorted into Slytherin. I’m a Gryffindor; Slytherin’s not my type; that’s what was running through my head. I got more furious when you envied Harry so much, and I could not even understand why. “Why Draco?”, was what I kept saying. Time passed, and my focus shifted more towards Harry, which made me distant from you. And finally, the moment came when I detached myself from you. How could you call Hermoine a mud blood when, after all, she was better than all the purebloods and, of course, YOU. I hated when you used your father’s power to get into things. On the other hand, Harry was a pure talent, and you were still filled with pride only because of what your father had. Time passed, and you continued to bully Harry, Ron, and Hermoine, not forgetting Neville, of course. I hated you and wanted to kill you. I cried continuously and could not stop sobbing because you became a murderer. The only hope everyone had was killed solely because of you. You were, after all, the person because of whom Dumbledore was killed. It was in that moment that I realized you could never be my favorite. The fifteen-year-old girl was devastated and could not comprehend how someone could be so selfish and cruel. I then decided that Draco Malfoy was unwelcome in my life.

Although I continue to adore you, Draco. Surprised right? Me too. Three years have passed, and I still rewatch that boy, trying to find out the reason behind his cruelty. You wanted to be a friend, but the way you expressed it was not a fault on your part. It was how you were raised. You were as innocent as any other child around you. The pride on your face showed gleams of fear too. Fear, of not being able to fulfill the standards your father had set for you. That innocent boy was burdened with pretending to be superior. You could have outshined Harry in your first quidditch match if it weren’t for that stupid Dobby. I am sorry, Draco, for blaming you for all these years for the death of Dumbledore. After all, you were just a boy who was unwillingly chosen and dragged into all of this. You had so much good in you that you cried at being the chosen one. I sympathized and felt guilty at the same time. I was so proud when you refused to recognize Harry when it was just in time that Bellatrix had called the Dark Lord. Although if you knew you could have said right away that it was Harry, then you would have made the Malfoy family proud. But still, that good in you stopped you from being evil. How can I forget that you threw the wand at Harry to help him? At that moment, it was clear that Draco Malfoy was not bad. He was virtuous. After the battle of Hogwarts, you proved to be a man of pride who was neither burdened to pretend nor to prove anything to anyone. You were the best father to Scorpius, and you supported him when everyone questioned his existence. You were a loving husband to Astoria, and you kept loving her even after her departure.

Draco, no matter what others think of you, I will always defend you in whatever way I can. I will support you, love you, and make everyone see the light in you that can outshine anyone.

P.S.: I hope you have started loving animals after your encounter with Buckbeak and your transfiguration as a Ferret.

With Love,

A girl who adores you.
