The Timeless Symphony: Exploring the Paradoxical Magic of Music
By Arushi Bhardwaj ( BA Programme English + Psychology)
Music is a paradoxical enchantment, a realm of diverse opinions, myriad interpretations, and a spectrum of genres. Yet, our collective love for this art imbues it with unique magic. In this blog, I will delve into the essence of music and uncover what makes it the mesmerising journey that it is.
Imagine yourself as the toddler you once were, lost in the ecstatic beats of your favourite song that you urged your parents to either sing or play on endless repeat. When we listen to music with love, it’s like that nostalgia envelops us. It sweeps us off our feet, spiralling us into a realm where time dissolves. The notes become our partners, twirling us through memories and emotions.
Each genre has its unique steps. Classical compositions like ghazals age gracefully, their intricate tunes echoing centuries of tradition. Rock and roll stomps and jumps, rebellious and untamed. Electronic beats pulse like a neon-lit nightclub, urging us to move. The twists and turns of A.R. Rahman’s compositions take you on a roller coaster, and jazz? Ah, jazz improvises—a syncopated dance where the saxophone flirts with the piano, and the double bass grooves.
But music isn’t always about movement. Sometimes, it’s the pause—the silence between notes—that speaks loudest. When the wave of sadness reaches the shore with our ears, it’s as if the world freezes, and we’re suspended in that moment. A haunting melody can hold us hostage, forcing us to confront our pain. A mournful violin, a heartbroken voice, an old song that you listened to with your childhood best friend—these are our companions in grief. They cradle us, whispering, “You’re not alone.” Even if people leave us, their imprint on our lives and playlists never does.
The metaphor of records and spinning reminds us that life itself is cyclical, and it is only with a series of highs and lows that we get to reach our outro. As the music crescendos and builds in our lives, it reveals a much grander orchestra than that of our imagination.
So, my fellow music lovers, let’s keep listening—whether in love or grief. Let’s spin like dervishes, pause like turning tops, and revel in the melodies. For music isn’t just sound; it’s the core of our existence—it’s a journey that surpasses time and space, boundaries and regions, ages and limits.
Note: As I write this, I listen to “Willow,” a song by Taylor Swift. With the distant hum of the piano and the guitar strings starting to play, I am teleported to a beautiful phase of my life. Music, after all, is both memory and hope.
This is how we all feel when we hear music, you gave words to them. Simply beautiful:)
