Love & Gelato

Love & Gelato is the type of novel that is akin to a summer wind – light, warm, and quietly poignant. It tells the story of Lina, who moves to Italy after her mom dies to live with her father, whom she knows very little. Such could have been quite a somber tale but is instead handled with warmth, humor, and, yes, lots of gelato.

Italy is more than background in this situation; it is also a character in this novel. The way in which Florence is portrayed, with narrow streets leading to secretive coffee shops, is what encourages Lina to heal. The actual significance in this situation is in Lina's mother's journal, which reveals many truths between her grief and curiosity.

The romance is sweet and slow-burn, based on dialogue and moments rather than dramatic actions. It rings true, not manufactured—this is just what this story needed.

Predictable? A bit. But that’s what makes this movie charming. Love & Gelato doesn’t aim for surprise but aims to comfort and succeeds at that.

You'll finish this book with an even fuller heart and the overwhelming urge to devour gelato or go to Italy. Or both.
