A Letter to Dumbledore

by Devika Aji

“Of course, it is happening inside your head, Harry, but why on earth should that mean that it is not real?"

Dear Dumbledore,

I remember the first time I stumbled upon your name, a whimsical echo reminiscent of a bumblebee buzzing playfully on my then-childish tongue. Now, as I pen down this letter, a whirlwind of emotions courses through me. As an ardent Potterhead, your presence in the tale embodies an enigmatic tandem of wisdom and fallibility.

It's nearly impossible to overlook the abundance of profound words you imparted throughout the series—words that have permeated into blood. "It takes a great deal of bravery to stand up to our enemies, but just as much to stand up to our friends," and "Do not pity the dead, Harry. Pity the living and, above all, those who live without love." Your teachings on friendship, sacrifice, and kindness have guided me through life's trials.

Your penchant for secrecy, occasional manipulations, and the art of withholding information were aspects that humanized you, reminding us that even the most remarkable individuals possess imperfections. These facets of your character invoked both frustration and empathy within me. But it was only when we got a chance to glimpse into your past that we fully understood you.

One cannot dismiss the influence of Gellert Grindelwald, a figure from your past whose impact on your life was profound and lasting. The echoes of your intertwined destinies and differing ideologies resonate in the depths of the wizarding world. Grindelwald, with his radical vision and magnetism, left a scorching impact on you, challenging your beliefs and shaping your path in unexpected ways.

Your encounter with Grindelwald serves as a poignant reminder that even the wisest can be swayed and misled by charismatic persuasions. Yet, through your experiences with him and the ultimate confrontation that followed, you evolved and strengthened, learning valuable lessons about power, responsibility, and the importance of unity in the face of dark forces.

The moment of your passing was pivotal in the tale, shattering the illusion of invincibility. Your sacrifice at the hands of Severus Snape, a man tormented by choices, heightened the complexity of your character. It underscored that heroes are not invincible, and they, too, suffer and succumb to the harsh realities of life.

Yet, in your passing, your mentorship of Harry came full circle. Your guidance, though enigmatic at times, prepared Harry for the ultimate confrontation. Through your memories and wisdom passed down, Harry discovered the power of love, sacrifice, and the true nature of the fight against darkness.

Upon reflection, the intricate tapestry of your character brings forth the essence of humankind. The layers of your being, the timeless quotes, and the portrayal of a flawed yet venerable mentor contribute to the depth and richness of the wizarding world.

Yours warmly,

Devika
